πΏMelbourne’s Art Deco cinemas of the late 1930s
As Melbourne emerged from the Depression in 1935 its citizens could again afford a night out at the pictures. The suburbs saw many new cinemas built, until it was curtailed by wartime building restrictions in 1941. Join Royce Harris of the Cinema and Theatre Historical Society (CATHS) as we explore the cinema experience of the 30s as well as take a look at the buildings themselves, which were moderne variations of the Art Deco architecture of the time.
Several of these cinemas, including the Rivoli in Camberwell and the Yarraville Sun, are still screening but you will also discover many long forgotten gems.
This is our annual Bruce Turner Lecture as well.
Bookings are essential with a gold coin for entry.

π Exodus from Vienna
Following the 1938 annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany, many members of Viennaβs vibrant Jewish community sought safe havens overseas to escape growing persecution. Amongst them were Michael and Regine Weiss and their family. Their story, as told through records held by the National Archives of Australia and other information provided by their descendants, reveals much about Australiaβs attitudes towards Jewish refugees during these dark days.
Presented by Patrick Ferry, Assistant State Manager of the Victoria office of the National Archives of Australia. Patrick is an archivist with over 20 years of experience in the field. He is also the author of various local history books and the winner of a Victorian Community History Award in 2020.

β°οΈ Barry Golding’s presentation delves into the question of how to help future generations confront the legacies of events surrounding mountains in our landscape. Focused on the peaks in southern Dja Dja Wurrung Country, his talk explores ideas for reconciling with these mountains and the communities residing on their slopes.
This presentation serves as a preview to the upcoming book, “Six Peaks Speak: Unsettling Legacies,” co-authored by Barry Golding and Clive Willman, scheduled for release in October 2024. It uncovers the unique stories of each peak, delving into geological origins, Dja Dja Wurrung management, and the exploitation and transformation of these landscapes since unsettlement.
Barry Golding acknowledges support for this project as part of a State Library Victoria Creative Fellowship in 2023.
