🖌️ Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack, the Bauhaus and his influence on art education in Australia

Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack was among the first students of the Weimar Bauhaus in 1919, where he was taught by Walter Gropius, Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky among others. He arrived in Australia during World War Two as an enemy alien, on board the Dunera, and spent many months in internment camps in Orange and Tatura. In 1942, he was released from internment to become the Art Master at Geelong Grammar School, where he remained for 15 years. In this talk, Resi Schwarzbauer will explore Hirschfeld-Mack’s significant contribution to art education in Victoria and beyond, including his legacy.

📚 Resi Schwarzbauer is the co-author, with the late Chris Bell (grandson of Hirschfeld-Mack), of Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack: More than a Bauhaus artist, published in 2021 by HistorySmiths. Books will be available for sale.
