Volunteering at the PMI Library:
In a small non-profit library with limited resources, we are always grateful when people are able to spare some time to assist with the smooth running of the library. We can use help in the following areas:
Volunteering at the library:
| Newsletter mailout | Our newsletter mailout is a big job - but many hands make light work! Volunteers for this job would be required for a 2-3 hour session up to four afternoons per year. Duties include collating, folding, sealing and labelling. Afternoon tea provided! |
| Book covering | Books and other materials added to the collection are labelled and covered by volunteers who attend the library weekly. Training is provided for skills in this area. Time commitment is entirely up to the individual. Currently we have a full contingent of book care volunteers. |
| Other duties | Some volunteers with technological, library or administrative experience carry out scanning of the PMI archives, data entry, bibliographic searching, collating and binding of periodicals and periodical audit duties. If you are interested in any of these tasks, or if you have any particular skills that you would like to use or develop, we look forward to receiving your expression of interest in volunteering at the PMI. |
Volunteering at home:
| PMI Pamphlets | Do you like to keep fit by going for walks around your local area? If so, and you live within the greater metropolitan area of Melbourne, why not take a batch of PMI pamphlets with you for delivery to mailboxes in your local area? The size of the batch is up to you, and delivery of even a small batch will help us spread the word about the library. |
| Creating a basic index | There are many small books in the library which would be much more useful to researchers if they contained a basic index. If you would be interested in creating an index for a book, an information sheet of basic guidelines will be provided to help you. |
There's a range of ways you can benefit from volunteering:
- certificates of appreciation presented annually for International Volunteer Day
- volunteer contributions noted in the PMI newsletter and PMI Annual Report
- a job reference or statement of work experience if needed
- the ability to place personal book orders at a discount
- subscription fee and library fines waived for the following calendar year (on completion of the 15th hour of volunteer service on premises or one indexing project)
- occasional training opportunities
- knowing that you are making a valuable contribution to a community owned, non-profit library service and a living part of Victoria's heritage.
- 1. Your name and address
2. The volunteer task(s) you would like to participate in (may or may not be on the above list)
3. Any particular qualifications, skills or experience you would like to use in your volunteer tasks
