This story follows the development of physical education in Victoria from 1870 to the present. It is the result of 15 years research and writing, 32 years of physical education teaching, personal experiences of past teachers and people prominent in physical education, and records gathered from the Victorian Education Department and the Australian Council for health, Physical Education and Recreation (Vic Branch). The text is enhanced by 100+ photographs, 150+ extracts from official sources and a roll call of teachers appointed to the Physical Education Branch 1910-1982. The transition from ‘physical culture’ to ‘physical training’ to ‘physical education’, and the government influence on these stages is outlined, along with some important questions about the prospective future of physical education.
