Keith Dunstan OAM
On 26 May 2009 at the Annual General Meeting, Keith Dunstan OAM, accepted patronage of the Prahran Mechanics Institute.
Mr Dunstan really needs no introduction - his career as a journalist, correspondent, columnist and author spans over 60 years. The PMI is honoured to house some seventeen items authored by him, including his histories of Brown Brothers, Moomba, the Melbourne Cricket Club, the Melbourne Cricket Ground and George's stores to name a few. But he is so much more than a history writer. His explorations of the Australian character and Melbourne life can be found across his writings.
In 2002 he received a Medal of the Order of Australia for service as a journalist and author, and to the community, particularly as a supporter of the Berry Street Babies Home.
Keith has been a member of the PMI for about 12 years and we are honoured that he has lent his voice to the PMI at a time when it looks forward with hope for its future survival and growth. Says Keith, The PMI is a superb research facility, used by many thousands of citizens and scholars. Unquestionably it has the best collection of local history material in Australia.
