Notes: Briagolong Mechanics' Institute still holds a major part of its historic collection, it is the only substantial Mechanics' Institute collection which has not been altered by use in the last half century. None of the other Mechanics' Institutes can present as complete an example of a Mechanics' Institute library, with its original holdings on its original shelves. The collection consists of material from the 19th and early 20th centuries, about three quarters fiction, fully card catalogued (at Maffra). Their are some historic photographs and portraits, of local importance.

Notes: Ellis Cottage Historical Centre is located at Nillumbik Square, Diamond Creek (Melway 12 F5). This building is constructed from local uncut stone, and originally had a shingle roof, which was later replaced by slate. The original owner, William Ellis, commenced construction in late 1865. The Nillumbik Historical Society accepted responsibility for the cottage's development in 1989 and the society houses a large collection of historic photographs, documents and family histories at the cottage. Ellis Cottage opens the first Sunday of the month, or by appointment.
