Named: After the entrance from Bass Strait to the Gippsland Lakes discovered by John Reeves in 1841. Formerly known as Cunninghame intil 1889 when permanent entrance for shipping was completed. The Cunninghames were at Clyde Bank near Sale from 1844. (Blake)
