Named: Local swamp, now drained, named in 1847 by surveyor W.S. Urquhart from Aboriginal word for plenty of blackfish. Settlement known until 1890 as Yallock. (Blake)
Prior to European settlement the area was occupied by the Bunurong Aboriginal people. It is from their language that the town’s name derives - ku-wirup allegedly meaning plenty of blackfish or blackfish swimming. (Wikipedia)
