Location: By Corio Bay, 75 km south-west of Melbourne
Named: In 1837 by Governor Bourke using an Aboriginal name for the district jillong meaning place of the cliff or white seabird or swamps where native companions live. The Aboriginal name had been noted as early as 1824 by Hume on Hovell. (Blake)
Aborigines called the area Corayo, the bay being called Jillong. By 1838 the area was known as Geelong, by this time the Aboriginal names for the land and water had been swapped. (Wikipedia)
