Melbourne Rare Book Week Event!

The Prahran Mechanics’ Institute was founded in 1854 and in the last 165 years it has accumulated a collection that not only covers the history of Victoria but contains many hidden gems.

Come along as Collections Librarian Ellen Coates takes you through the treasures of the collection.

All stories are shaped by the documents that survive to tell them and the PMI is no exception. The tale starts with the letters, ephemera, invitations, dance cards, petitions, plans and registers that make up the PMIs own history. The narrative continues as we follow the collection through the books and ephemera which represent its journey over the last 165 years. The chronicle concludes with the rare items the PMI is collecting even today and the ephemera it collects that will become tomorrow’s rare collection.

The talk will immerse you in the PMI’s collection and give you the impetus to explore further.
