Dookie, City of Greater Shepparton, Victoria, Australia

Postcode: 3646
Description: Farming township
Location: Goulburn Valley region, 20 km west of Benalla, 29 km east of Shepparton
Named: Named by surveyor Wilmot from Malay word meaning lament, because landholder Mrs Turnbull bewailed some land losses caused by the survey. (Blake)
Local lore has it that Mrs Turnbull, a local station proprietor’s wife, was so unhappy at the prospect of survey and possible farm subdivision that the surveyor suggested a place name derived from the Singhalese word duka, meaning sorrow. Mrs. Turnbull had lived in Ceylon. Duka was later re-spelt Dookie. (History of Dookie website)
