Bruce Henry Turner (1929-)

Bruce Turner was born in New Zealand. He served with the Royal New Zealand Navy from 1945-1955 including active service in Korea. Over the next 30 years turned his attention to the fields of librarianship and publishing in places such as New Zealand, Samoa, Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory.
Turner brought extensive library experience and enthusiasm to the Prahran Mechanics’ Institute where he served as the first full-time Secretary-Librarian from 1984-1996
He was charged with implementing the new collection development policy, which would see the Victorian & Local History Library take shape, and
with supervising the gradual automation of the history catalogue with the assistance of the then Prahran Library Service (now Stonnington Library and Information Service). Turner also worked to promote the Prahran Mechanics’ Institute in the local media and beyond, and helped to develop partnerships with other organisations with similar interests. Bruce Turner is shown (left) receiving his life membership of Prahran Mechanics’ Institute on 1 May 2005 from committee President Alf Lazer (right).
