Alan Rodgers Shinkfield (1914-2000)

Alan Shinkfield’s mother and Harry Furneaux’s father were cousins. Shinkfield joined the Mechanics’ Institute while attending the Prahran Technical School in the 1920s. He was elected to the Institute Committee in 1980 and served on the Committee for twenty years. He was awarded a Life Membership in 1982.
It was Shinkfield who suggested that prizes be given by the Committee every year to a grade 6 student nominated at primary schools in the Stonnington area.
The Committee decided to call the awards the Alan Shinkfield Awards for Excellence in honour of his long service to the Institute, and six schools participate annually.
