Prahran Technical School (1915-1971)

The School was founded by the Prahran Mechanics’ Institute as an extension of its art classes begun in 1870 at the Chapel Street premises. The School operated on the site from 1915 to 1971. In 1955 a girls technical school was begun in Hornby Street, Prahran.
These photographs are part of a series taken for a Prahran Technical School prospectus in 1927.
The series shows classes in architectural drawing, metalwork, science, drawing, French polishing, upholstering, wood machining and sewing. Did you know that Sidney Nolan, Sir William Dargie, Joan Carden and Howard Arkley all studied at the Prahran Tech?
