July 20 1854
Sir,
I am desired by His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 17th Inst, and to inform you that it will give Sir Charles & Lady Hotham great pleasure to have their names added to the list of Patrons of the Prahran Mechanics’ Institute.
I have the honor to be Sir

In December 1854 Lady Hotham was patron of a fair held in the Botanic Gardens which raised £500 for the Institute. In June 1854 Sir Charles and Lady Latrobe attended a concert in aid of the Prahran Mechanics’ Institute building fund. Government support played an important role in the Institute’s early fundraising activities.
