Frederick James Sargood (c1805-1873)

Sargood migrated to Australia from England with his wife and six children in 1850. He established the wholesale soft goods business Sargood, King & Co., a business which thrived and expanded to other colonies. A political radical, and defender of the early closing movement, Sargood was a member of the Legislative Council for Melbourne in 1853-56, during which time he became a trustee of the Prahran Mechanics’ Institute, and registered owner of the Institute’s first land. He was the first chairman of the Prahran Municipal Council 1856-1858. He was also a member of the Legislative Assembly for St. Kilda in 1856-57. Sargood returned to England around 1867 and passed away there in 1873.

Sargood’s son, Sir Frederick Thomas Sargood, was a career politician, and is noted as the builder of ‘Rippon Lea’ in Elsternwick.
